Rummble’s mission is to make it as easy as possible for you to find stuff nearby you like.

Rummble makes it easier to share & discover places and points of interest nearby you love. Rummble is a service and platform all about the long tail of points of interest – the useful nuggets of info about the physical world we all have in our heads: e.g. the best picnic site, dog walk, kite surfing beach, vista of a city…

As users interact with the service to share & discover content, Rummble understands the context of their search including real-time data from Twitter and other sources. We have combined the technologies of local search and social discovery into one service to provide personalised recommendations.

How does Rummble personalise content?

Rummble’s algorithm provides personalised results based upon a trust profile it builds for you from your usage of Rummble and the connections in your social network; we call it a “trust network”.

We’ve chosen to build our first service around location based content:

  • Discover content for any location (e.g. cool bars, local knowledge and the secret hangouts)
  • Publish your Rummbles and your location to Facebook, Twitter and other social software
  • Share location based content – reviews, photos, videos and blogs
  • See which places nearby are busy from Twitter activity – we call this activity tremors and we are incorporating this into our main service, having run tests in our labs at tremors.rummble.com

It works anywhere – you can use it at home or on the move via your mobile.

Rummble works globally and has been in closed Beta since September 2007. In April 2008 the Rummble service went into limited open Beta and we released our first mobile app in November 2009. Since then we’ve been working with partners to extend the content available to the service and more recently on a new version of the app, alongside new platforms.

Rummble is built by a small team based in London and Cambridge, England and some of the time San Francisco, USA.

We are all passionate about social media and particularly location based mobile services and Web 3.0 – the semantic or “social” web. Learn more about our awesome team here!

Background

Prior to developing Rummble, the Founder/CEO (Andrew Scott) and CTO (Clive Cox) ran Europes first location based social network: playtxt.net .

playtxt.net was a pioneering social application, too clever for its own good and much too early to market. playtxt included location based SMS, a full web service, WAP service and latterly a demo Java J2ME application. You can read more about playtxt on Wired.
