Fruits of our Facebook Hackathon

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Recently the Rummble team to took part in London’s biggest ever Facebook Developer Garage and Hackathon.

Andrew and Callum started from scratch and developed the concept, core functionality and pitch during the day on Sunday. Having won the evening pitch, judged by none other than Mark Zuckerberg to be a “simple solution to a problem which needs solving”; Alex joined the party at Dare Digital’s office to code through the night to prepare for live demos on Monday.

Andrew Scott's Recommend a Place Rummble pitch at Facebook Hackathon

The idea, which spawned from a brainstorm with Alex’s non-technical sister, Sophie, is to allow Facebook users to ask for personalised recommendations for places from their trusted Facebook friends.

Pitched as the ”laziest way to get recommendations of places to go”, the lazy part is where Rummble’s tech ninjas got stuck in. After selecting a location, the app suggest friends that should be able to offer great place recommendations, based upon the information connected to their profile in Facebook.

Rummble Recommend a Place Facebook App

We are truly excited to bring this simple gem of an idea to life to share with fellow Rummblers and Facebookers. So, we hear you ask, how does ‘Recommend a Place’ work?

Here’s how it works

  1. Tell us the city you want recommendations for
  2. We find which friends know the city
  3. You select who you want us to ask
  4. We post to their wall asking for recommendations
  5. You get a list of awesome places to go!

So head on over to http://apps.facebook.com/recommendaplace to ask your friends for great recommendations for this beautiful sunny weekend!

Local Heroes More Heroic and Rummble for Android bug fix

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Two bits of important news today:

  • An upgrade to the Local Heroes interaction
  • Important bug fix for foreign language Android phones

Medals

Heroes

In Rummble for Android (or from your phone browser at m.rummble.com ) you now receive instant feedback from Rummbling (i.e. creating a review or a check-in to a venue) to see instantly which medal you’re competing for and also if you’ve won it.

Don’t forget, becoming a Local Hero is not just the number of check-ins, it is based on a smart algorithm which works out how trusted you are by the Rummble community.

If the most people agree with your opinions about a subject in a certain area, we think it is right that you should be recognised for your superior knowledge and opinions for that area- you are, a Local Hero!

The Local Hero update includes:

  • New medal overview page
  • Local Heroes algorithm tweaked to include certain types of check-in in the calculation
  • Instant re-calculation of medals for a direct feedback after Rummbling or check-in
  • More medals for more subjects – now just waiting to be discovered!

Rummble for Android improvements

Improvements in the Rummble for Android app include the above, plus:

  • Removed all loading dialogues in the Rummbling process – no more waiting while rating!
  • Changed the layout of the check-in screen and integrated the medals feedback inline
  • Update-check process so you never miss an update (you’ll be warned at up start if there is a new version)
  • Non-English Android phones: Fixed a crash when you’re using a different language than English

  • Layout changes of check-i -screen (title now “Checked in!” to make it clearer, counter on top right)
  • Feedback after publishing checkin-status (success/failure)
  • Added text to navigation tabs
  • Added top bar with check-in and back-button on all tabs of Rummble Details screen
  • Photo can be added from file and camera on review of a Rummble
  • Map view works correctly even when no address is set
  • Changed Rummble personalised rating icons to default to Emoticon style smilies on the Rummble List
  • …and added an option under Settings to change back to numeric-icons if you dont like them!

..but there’s more. Want the very very latest version (before it has been fully tested ;-) and to help us make improvements? you can always download the latest build even before it hits the marketplace, at http://bit.ly/rumalpha

WAYN and Rummble announce integrated app for Android and iPhone

In a disruptive move, two of Europes leading start-ups have been working together on a new app combining WAYN’s dreams engine™ with Rummble’s award winning personalised recommendation service.

WAYN for iphone login screenshot“WAYN is all about connecting people who love doing the same things as you. By integrating Rummble technology, WAYN users will also be able to locate great places to meet.” said Peter Ward, Co-Founder of WAYN. “People have dreams big and small. It might be visiting Rio De Janeiro, climbing Mount Everest, or simply getting into that new VIP club you’ve always wanted to go to” he said.

WAYN went mobile in 2008 and also launched mobile flight alerts and a speaking translator for travellers.  Rummble have already launched their own iPhone, Android and Windows Phone apps, serving their fast growing community with nearly 1,000,000 points of interest.

“WAYN finds the people, Rummble helps you find the places” said Andrew Scott, Founder of Rummble. “The Rummble API is available to any developer to use but by working even more closely with WAYN it will give their 15.5 million strong community a great user experience.”

Rummble says they provide both traditional venue recommendations but also what Andrew calls the “long tail of the physical world” meaning things like the best dog walks, kite surfing beaches or picnic spots.  The global WAYN community will be able to tap into these offerings immediately, which also include directions, distances and Tweets about venues . “This is just a first step” said Peter Ward, “we’ve got even more exciting plans to come”.

WAYN for iPhone and Android is due to launch in May 2010. Bloggers and reviewers should contact WAYN for technology previews.

Check-in to Twestival and Donate 50p with #Rummble

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Twestival LogoWatch out poverty – Twestival kicks off tomorrow in hundreds of worldwide cities!

London Twestival 2010 builds upon the phenomenal success of Twestival’s inaugural year and just as 2009, Concern Worldwide LogoRummble will be donating 50p to charity (this year, Concern Worldwide) for every Tweeter who check-ins at the Cable Club, the London Twestival event venue.

Two really easy ways to checkin:

  1. Got a fancy phone? Install Rummble for iPhone, Android or Windows Phone. Then find and check-in to Cable Club – the London Twestival venue. You can link your Twitter account & tweet out checkins and view your Twitter friends read more here.
  2. OR check-in from Twitter! Simply end a Tweet such as I’m at Cable Club, London #Rummble and we’ll do the rest – you don’t even have to be an existing Rummble user!

Last year our good friend Amanda Rose tweeted up a global army of party organisers and tweeple; on a mission to have fun while raising money to help save and radically improve thousands of lives with charity: water by providing clean drinking water to people in developing nations – something most of us take for granted.

This year, your “donations” will be tallied on Friday we’ll also post links right here to everyone who checks in! Have fun, dig deep and don’t forget to tell your friends to #Rummble their checkin tweets! :)

To find out more about Rummble for Twitter, check out our recent blog post and coverage on VentureBeat, TechCrunch and TheNextWeb.
