A quick recap of the evening of LondonLebowski3 – Third Time Lucky…
One week ago (24th of August) the Rummble team gathered at the Trocadero to participate in a geek bowling event organised by @cyberdees. At the very beginning we were looking for something to eat – working till 6PM, it’s so tough! After charging our batteries we were ready to spread the word and give our new stickers (much like these) to peeps. They split us to different lanes, so we could chat with various geeks. We met great people out there! Thanks for talk and play to all people who supported us bowling. Especially to organiser – Desigan Chinniah!

Finally only one of our Rummblers contributed to win trophy for Top rolling lane. But we still had fun and we even got Team Lebowski badges! This kind of events should be every week!
This cool evening couldn’t exist without the help of the sponsors: Threadsy, DAD, Total Media, e-search, MinuteBox, Chinwag Jobs, PayPal X, Flow Interactive – So thank you very much sponsors we had a really good time.

Some of the Rummble team attended Moo’s 4th birthday party at 93 Feet East, an event that celebrated Moo’s success, starting as a small European startup based in London and growing into one of the web’s biggest and most innovative printers, with offices in the UK and USA. It’s fair to say Moo has rocked the dry printing world.

The event was a fantastic place to meet people in a variety of roles from London’s hottest startups; such as GoMix, Viadeo, Tweetmeme, Huddle, WAYN, BookingBug, GroupSpaces, and brand new startups on a mission to carve cool niches.
All in all it was another entertaining dive into London’s startup community, which is growing ever stronger thanks to initiatives like TechHub (http://rmb.ly/17TJJ), now offering free co-working on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to tech peeps.

To follow on from a recent post that explains how to publish your rummbles and check-ins to Twitter, it’s also worth sharing that Rummble has been rocking Twitter API OAuth for a couple of months now.
So what does that mean for Rummble users? OAuth is more secure and you won’t have to tell us your new password if you change it on Twitter.

Photo credit: Some rights reserved by paulswansen
How does OAuth work?
Think of it like a car valet parking service for web services, where for each Twitter user OAuth keeps a record of which apps and permissions that are allowed and handover the keys after a securely signed handshake giving authorisation to go and park your car (i.e. authorising an app to connect). Connect your Twitter account here.
Why is OAuth better than just logging in using my username and password?
When you want to share something you like from a site in another site like Twitter, you click share, they ask you to enter your username and your password. When you do this, the site has the right to see your information. Just like giving your credit card and your password to the cashier. Is that really a safe way of sharing? The answer is no, that’s why we have introduced the OAuth API to Rummble.
You can now share the places you’ve liked or loathed even more safely than before!

There are over 2,171 medals for Local Heroes up for grabs in America, but as of July 2010 the hardest of all to win is:
Local Hero for Restaurants
in San Francisco’s Financial Disctrict

With over 70 other users competing to be the most influential gastronomic advisor in the Rummble community, it’s knives and forks at dawn for those who enjoy their food!
If you’re not familiar with Rummble’s medals, you can read more about becoming a Local Hero here, but here’s a brief explanation:
What do the medals represent?
Rummble uses its unique trust algorithm to work out who are the most influential people in each area for specific topics. By influential, we mean who is trusted most for their opinions, by the rest of the community.
You can view the medals on any of our Rummble mobile apps and of course on the mobile website (m.rummble.com).
How does Rummble decide who wins?
When you Rummble (add a rating, review or check-in) in a specific area related to the topic (e.g. restaurants and eating out in San Francisco) you will be competing with other users who have reviewed places in that area. Whoever has the most trusted ratings in that area becomes Local Hero.
Why are some harder than others to win?
How hard each medal is to win, depends on the number of places in that subject in an area and the number of people reviewing.
How are the areas split up?
What’s really cool is that Rummble medals are calculated for real-life area boundaries in the US and UK. We hope to add more countries soon.

The financial district in San Francisco – there’s a war raging for the influence of opinion of restaurants in the area!
Why do the winners change?
As peoples opinions change about your reviews – because places change too! – you may win or lose the medal to someone who does ratings which are more accurate, more trusted or more up to date … So you will have to keep Rummbling in order to retain your medals!
Why do I want medals?
Being a Local Hero is cool because it demonstrates that you know your area really well
The medal is meaningful because it is based on other peoples trust in your opinions, rather than just how often you go to a venue or the number of times you check in
It’s really helpful for people arriving in an area to find a great trustworthy resource from one person about the types of place they’re interested in
It’s a great excuse to check out the latest bars, restaurants, parks – or whatever floats your boat – in your area
It keeps owners of places on their toes as their ratings change over time
Helps venue owners know who the influential reviewers are for a specific area ..which may help make sure you get that special table next time you’re eating out perhaps
Very soon, Local Hero’s will earn special privelages and the medals will become more valuable
..so watch this space!

There are over 5,186 medals for Local Heroes up for grabs in the UK, but as of July 2010 the hardest of all to snitch is…
Local Hero for Pubs in Finsbury

..with over 143 other users competing to be Finsburys Local Hero for Pubs. If you’re not familiar with Rummble medals, you should read more about becoming a Local Hero, but here’s a brief explanation:

It’s the third day of the Next Web conference. The weather has been gorgeous and that is good as half (that’s 3) of the Rummble team have been cycling around this historic and beautiful Dutch city distributing our new interactive stickers to all the most popular venues (and a few of the less well known ones too
The Next Web kindly wrote up a piece about our adventures!

We were very happy to see the Rummble Team apartment was appropriately Apartment R !!
If you don’t know what a QR code is, it’s the funny 2D barcode square which you see people pointing their mobile phones at. It takes you to a URL. We’re printed unique QR codes for all the venues and after zapping one you can check-in or Rummble (review) the venue, but also find out who’s in the venue now, or recently.

We had fantastic food at Loup bar
In the future we’ll be adding much more functionality around the Rummble points of interest we make QR codes for – including some tools for the venue owners themselves.

The Rummble QR code stickers proved popular!
Finally, we believe check-in is just a commodity. The location of your social graph (where all your friends are) should be available to any start-up; perhaps Facebook will at some point make this happen – meanwhile, we’re happy to share location check-in information with any reputable start-up or “competitor” via our Rummble API, if you do the same (and of course respect your users privacy settings). Just contact us; and meanwhile lookout for a Rummble sicker near you!

..and after a long night enterrtaining the crowd back to some late night coding & operational planning!

We were very happy to see the Rummble Team apartment was appropriately Apartment R !!

WAYN and Rummble announce integrated app for Android and iPhone
In a disruptive move, two of Europes leading start-ups have been working together on a new app combining WAYN’s dreams engine™ with Rummble’s award winning personalised recommendation service.
“WAYN is all about connecting people who love doing the same things as you. By integrating Rummble technology, WAYN users will also be able to locate great places to meet.” said Peter Ward, Co-Founder of WAYN. “People have dreams big and small. It might be visiting Rio De Janeiro, climbing Mount Everest, or simply getting into that new VIP club you’ve always wanted to go to” he said.
WAYN went mobile in 2008 and also launched mobile flight alerts and a speaking translator for travellers. Rummble have already launched their own iPhone, Android and Windows Phone apps, serving their fast growing community with nearly 1,000,000 points of interest.
“WAYN finds the people, Rummble helps you find the places” said Andrew Scott, Founder of Rummble. “The Rummble API is available to any developer to use but by working even more closely with WAYN it will give their 15.5 million strong community a great user experience.”
Rummble says they provide both traditional venue recommendations but also what Andrew calls the “long tail of the physical world” meaning things like the best dog walks, kite surfing beaches or picnic spots. The global WAYN community will be able to tap into these offerings immediately, which also include directions, distances and Tweets about venues . “This is just a first step” said Peter Ward, “we’ve got even more exciting plans to come”.
WAYN for iPhone and Android is due to launch in May 2010. Bloggers and reviewers should contact WAYN for technology previews.

A few years back before The Next Web became one of the European king of conferences, Rummble helped keep the fun flowing by sponsoring some beers and making the Diggnation fanboys swear allegance to “Rummble” to get their beer. This year we return alongside the clever bods at Waze and with Patricks help we’ve got 7 gorgeous DJs in tow too to keep the night buzzing.
The Next Web is always a fantastic event. With a great mix of European and U.S. influences, it is irreverant while informative and is definetely represents the best about the European start-up scene: a work hard, play hard attitude in an eclectic environment.
We were hoping to launch our new (simpler better!) website at Next Web, but sadly we’ve not been able to get it done yet…but have a beer with us meanwhile and we promise it will be ready for May!
Join Rummble at BRIX, Loup and Wolvenstraat bar until way past midnight. Make sure you join us for a taste of the Amsterdam party atmosphere, kicking off at Wolvenstraat with the Pony Peaches followed up by DJ Leroy Rey at BRIX.

Join us for some fun ... or if you're a great UI/Ux person talk to us
PS- as you can see from the hatchet job the CEO has done on this graphic, we’re still eager to find a pixel ninja to join the team… apply within!

We think that the holidays are about spending time with the people who mean the most to you… so, a Rummble holiday get-together was a must this year!
People are now Rummbling in 193 countries, many of which have very different traditions to us here in Europe. Our team is multinational too, with English, American, Russian, Italian and an Indian. For our holiday celebration, the team recently went ice skating at Somerset House.

Was it a good laugh?

We’ll let you decide!

We’d like to thank all of you in the Rummble community for continuing to support us, provide feedback, and keeping the Rummble dream alive. The Rummble team wishes you a Happy Holiday season, wherever you are and whatever you may celebrate this year.
Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for footage from this ice skating adventure on Rummble.tv’s Christmas Special, premiering this Wednesday, Dec. 23rd.

It has been a little over a week since the Rummble team relocated to an office building next to Farringdon station.

We’ve been enjoying our time in the new area and have been Rummbling along the way! Some of our new favourite spots include ‘Meze Meze Juice Bar‘, a new lunch spot that serves grilled paninis, bagel sandwiches, and specialies in falafel wraps.

Damir, Rummble’s iPhone developer, tagged the venue under ‘drink, juice bars, food’ and rated the venue quite highly based on his delicious lunch there last week… we’ll definitely be back soon!
Another Clerkenwell ‘hotspot’ are the shops and market stalls along Leather Lane. From a Pret a Manger, to fresh fruit/veg, to vintage clothes, or random household nick-knacks, Leather Lane has it all. One of the area’s infamous lunch stalls is Daddy Donkey, a local Mexican takeaway stand. Daddy Donkey queues can get up to 30 minutes waiting time during the lunch rush!

Although one of our staff members had a some bad side-effects from the infamous burrito one afternoon, plenty of us still think that the average waiting time speaks for itself…

We’re looking forward to plenty more adventures on Clerkenwell Road, so keep your eye out for new Rummbling around the area.
